Legs peered out from the
apartment complex’s green dumpster. Police knocked on the bin, then flashed
their lights inside. Woken up from her sleep, a woman climbed out barefoot
dressed in torn clothing.
Angela Amirkhanian and
her family stood in awe as the woman picked up and walked away, never to be
seen again.
It wasn’t until later
Amirkhanian realized the significance of her experience on that cold winter
evening.
“It had to be a sign from
the universe to do something, no matter how big or small my plan,” Amirkhanian
said.
Some students find their
passion in drawing, singing, or a playing a sport, but Amirkhanian, a CSUN
alumni, found hers in spreading the gift of love to the homeless throughout Los
Angeles during the winter season.
Amirkhanian is no
stranger to homelessness and has always been affected by the issue. It’s seen
on every other street and corner in her Hollywood neighborhood she said.
“I’ve always seen it with
my eyes and my heart,” Amirkhanian said.
In 2012, Amirkhanian
started an annual blanket drive for the homeless called Love Is a Warm Blanket.
The joy from the
interactions with those receiving blankets is what makes it all worth it for
her.
Every year, blankets pile
up in gold polka dot donation boxes, waiting to make someone’s day.
Donations and personal
distributions begin in October and run through January. Over the years, the
drive has paired up with shelters like My Friend’s Place, Light House for Women
& Children, and The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission in efforts to warm
those in need.
Natalie Kmbikian, a high
school friend of Amirkhanian’s, said the organization was founded from the love
and kindness of her heart that she hoped to share with the homeless.
“I announced it at my
church and members donated,” Kmbikian said, while adding that she has
contributed in donating and volunteering at distributions.
Cody Moore, a history
major at CSUN, was first introduced to the organization by his girlfriend who
donated after Thanksgiving in 2015.
“Angela’s drive has made
me realize that I’m fortunate enough to contribute,” Moore said. “Giving a
blanket away is the least I could do for a good cause.”
People can donate new or
gently used blankets that have been washed to any of these three drop-off
locations: The Valley Economic Alliance in Sherman Oaks, San Fernando Valley
Rescue Mission in Northridge, and All State Insurance in Glendale.

Love is a Warm Blanket (LIAWB) is kicking off its fifth year of
collecting and distributing donations of blankets to the homeless in local
communities.
“Though the street is not a home, we aim to provide warmth, love
and attention where it is needed most,” said Angela Amirkhanian, founder of LIAWB,
an annual blanket drive during winter months whose mission is to warm the
hearts of the homeless and spread love with donations of blankets. LIAWB is now
accepting donations of new and gently used (washed) blankets of all sizes.
Among the blanket donation drop off boxes is All State Insurance, 1219 S.
Glendale Ave. in Glendale. The drive also has an Amazon WishList, where donors
can select and checkout blankets on the list, and send directly to the drive.
The list can be viewed at tinyurl.com/LIAWBAmazon.
LIAWB personally handed out near 400 blankets to the general
homeless population living on the streets and through distribution events with
homeless shelters last year. They held events in Downtown, Los Angeles’ Skid
Row and at Ascencia’s emergency winter shelter, where residents chose blankets
they wanted. LIAWB also donates blankets to homeless shelters and resource
centers including My Friend’s Place’s, Union Rescue Mission, The San Fernando
Valley Rescue Mission, Light House for Women and Children, LA Family Housing,
and MEND.

Prop HHH supporters on the fence about $1.2 billion bond to Reduce Homelessness
The Sundial
October 31, 2016
With a rise in
homelessness in Los Angeles, especially among women and children, Prop HHH
(Homes, Help, Hope) offers funding and resources to help get homeless the
housing and help they need.
The proposition’s goal to
help finance 8,000-10,000 units of Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) instead
of the usual 3,000 the city is able to finance has supporters on the fence on
whether the proposition will decrease homelessness in the city.
According to yesonhhh.com, more than 28,000 are homeless in Los Angeles,
and homelessness went up by 11 percent last year. Encampments increased by 20
percent, and women account for 61 percent of the increase since 2011. The $1.2
billion “Homelessness Reduction and Prevention, Housing, and Facilities Bond”
aims to decrease these statistics.
According to Wade
Trimmer, director of San Fernando
Rescue Mission, a program designed to provide homeless families
opportunities to obtain food, shelter, and basic life necessities; homelessness
has increased approximately 22 percent within the last year in the valley.
Trimmer said factors such
as economics, domestic violence, mental health and addiction issues are what
causes an increase in homelessness. When it comes to families, Trimmer believes
housing is extremely difficult to obtain with high rent prices in Los Angeles.
According to Trimmer,
many shelters lost their funding which now goes to Housing First, a homeless
assistance approach that prioritizes providing people experiencing homelessness
with permanent housing as quickly as possible.
Another factor he
stressed, is domestic violence.
“One of the biggest
reasons for family homelessness is domestic violence, there are few domestic
violence shelters or safe houses,” Trimmer said.
Although it is not clear
whether Trimmer will vote yes or no on Prop HHH, he does support the
proposition in a sense that he thinks it will provide some relief. However,
relief is not enough for Trimmer.
“What really needs to
change is our policies, we need to change the things that are making homelessness
possible,” Trimmer said. “If we really want to build ourselves out of this, we
need something like 12 to 14 billion dollars.”
Angela Amirkhanian, who
will be hosting her fifth annual blanket drive for the homeless this winter,
will vote yes this November because she believes the proposition is a good
start to fixing the issue.
“Homelessness is such a
huge issue that a lot of people choose to ignore, unfortunately, and it’s just
getting worse and worse,” Amirkhanian said. “Now that we have a strategy I
think that it’s huge progress.”
However, Amirkhanian is
concerned with how long it’s going to take to implement the funding. She said
many people think the solution to helping a homeless individual is giving them
change.
“I realized that these
people don’t get to spend the holidays like we do, around friends and family,
so thought it would be a good way to connect with them, wish them happy
holidays, and give them something that they can use throughout the year,”
Amirkhanian said. “I thought blankets are something people use both during the
summer and winter, so I thought that would be a good item to give away to
them.”
In addition, Amirkhanian
thinks vocational training is important, and that providing the homeless with
the tools to even look for work is a huge help.
“It’s not only getting
these individuals off the streets, it’s giving them resources and tools for
them to adjust to the life after getting off the streets,” Amirkhanian said.
Christopher Linares, a
broadcast journalism major, said he will vote yes on Prop HHH because he
believes homelessness continues to grow as an epidemic.
“I want to see more resources
because homeless people are humans too, who need protection,” Linares said.

Spreading Love and Warmth to the Homeless

Love is a Warm Blanket (LIAWB) is kicking off its fifth year of collecting and distributing donations of blankets to the homeless in our communities. “Though the street is not a home, we aim to provide warmth, love and attention where it is needed most,” said Angela Amirkhanian, founder of LIAWB, an annual blanket drive during winter months whose mission is to warm the hearts of the homeless and spread love with donations of blankets. Join the love! LIAWB is now accepting donations of new and gently used (washed) blankets of all sizes.
Blanket donation drop off boxes are available at The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission (Northridge) The Valley Economic Alliance (Sherman Oaks) and All State Insurance (Glendale).
The drive also has an Amazon WishList, where you can simply select and checkout blankets on the list, and send directly to the drive. The list can be viewed at tinyurl.com/LIAWBAmazon. They held events in Downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row and at Ascencia’s emergency winter shelter, where residents chose blankets of choice. “Recipients are extremely grateful for the blankets, but what goes the longest way is interacting and having normal human conversation with them,” said Amirkhanian. “Asking for their names and how they’re doing,” she added.
LIAWB also donates blankets to homeless shelters and resource centers including My Friend’s Place’s Union Rescue Mission, The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, Light House for Women and Children, LA Family Housing, and MEND. As the drive continues to grow, so does its mission.
Last year, many organizations, companies, churches, hospitals, and schools encouraged giving and helping those in need amongst their groups. Lionsgate Entertainment placed bins at their Santa Monica branch and encouraged employees to donate.
The Christian Outreach for Armenians Church collected blankets before service. Attendees at The Valley Economic Alliance’s holiday open house brought blankets to the party. For more information visit www.LIAWB.blogspot.com

Love is a Warm Blanket, a nonprofit foundation created by Angela Amirkhanian, is once again distributing donations of blankets to the homeless this winter.
She said she founded her foundation in 2012 after “wanting to help in areas that needed help.”
“Though the street is not a home, we aim to provide warmth, love and attention where it’s needed most,” said Amirkhanian, whose personal mission is to help the homeless during the winter months with donations of blankets.
“I pictured the homeless not getting a chance to spend holidays with family, friends, food and homes,” Amirkhanian said. “I wanted to provide some warmth and comfort to those who do not get to spend the holidays like others can. I also thought blankets are not only for when it’s cold. Those who sleep outdoors need blankets year round.”
Amirkhanian seeks donations, then distributes blankets from October through the end of January. And 2015 is turning into the foundation’s biggest year. Love is a Warm Blanket has distributed nearly 400 blankets to the general homeless population living on the streets. and through distribution events with homeless shelters.
The foundation participated in MEND’s (Meet Each Need with Dignity) Pacoima holiday basket program for low income families with children under 14 in December, giving 40 blankets. There have been events in downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row last January and will again this January, where residents chose blankets.
The foundation has also donated blankets to the My Friend’s Place in Hollywood parenting program for homeless youth and, most recently, gave blankets to the Ascencia emergency shelter winter for homeless residents in Glendale on Dec. 20.
What has helped make this year a bountiful one, Amirkhanian said, were contributions from a variety of businesses and organizations that allowed her to expand the amount of donations she presents. Donors include Lionsgate Entertainment ,the Christian Outreach for Armenians Church and The Valley Economic Alliance.
But even though Amirkhanian personally distributes all of the blankets herself, she tries to have a representative from a donating business come with her.
“I ask the largest donors to come with me to the shelters to give the blankets out and make conversation,” she said. “I want them to see how dire the homeless situation is, and the gratitude I experience, rather than just making a donation,” she said.
“I want to take love where it’s needed. And, other than providing a little warmth, I want to spread some love.”

Warming Up Bodies and Souls

Thinking of ways to give back to her community, Angela Amirkhanian wrote one day about a blanket drive. But thinking it would be too time consuming, she simply put the paper away and didn’t give it much thought.Three years ago, one of the tenants in her apartment complex in Hollywood said there was a person who was in a trash bin that had been turned over.
“We called the police and it was simply a homeless woman. She had climbed in there just to keep warm,” Amirkhanian recalled. “When the police came they told her she was trespassing and we literally watched her walk away, barefoot and all. I was so moved by it, I thought that was a sign for me to pursue this random vision I’d had of a blanket drive.”
And so began “Love is a Warm Blanket," a blanket drive that runs from October to February that aims to warm the hearts and souls of the less fortunate during the holidays. “Those that do not get to spend this time with family, food and warm homes,” Amirkhanian said.
Program Has Grown
Founded in 2012, what started with only a few donated blankets from friends and family, has gained the attention of hundreds through social media outlets, local publications and word of mouth.
“In 2012, being the first year, I had the support of family and friends. They gave me blankets they didn't really use," she said.
In 2013, she reached out to the general public and the effort grew.
Last year, Amirkhanian sought more help through Facebook, Twitter and some blogs, and the response grew exponentially.
“Love is a Warm Blanket” has handed out nearly 200 blankets to the homeless this winter.
“Hearing the gratitude and seeing the smiles of these vulnerable people gives me so such joy. I do this purely out of love,” said Amirkhanian, 27, who works for the The Valley Economic Alliance.
Amirkhanian and some of her biggest donors distribute the new and used blankets to the homeless directly. This year, she gave them out at the parking lot of the Union Rescue Mission, in downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row area.
She also passed them out during the Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission in Sun Valley, where she also helped out in the kitchen.
Thanks All Around
Being able to pursue this endeavor has really been eye opening, Amirkhanian said.
“It’s great to have the support of people who don’t even know me. Many people want to help, they just need a cause they believe in, and when I hear from people asking me where they can drop off 25 blankets they purchased, it’s great,” she said.
But nothing compares with the actual passing out of the blankets to the homeless.
“It’s such a reality check for me. They’re so grateful, thankful and so kind and sometimes you just take these people for granted," Amirkhanian said.
"It's heartwarming and sad at the same time," she added. “[But] their gratitude and the smiles, it keeps me going.”
She said the blankets have proven to be a good option for distributing donations to the homeless. They’re durable and something a person without a home or a warm place to sleep can use year round, even in the summer.
Amirkhanian is happy she never threw away those notes she jotted down on a piece of paper.
“This little passion of mine turned into a great way to help people,” she said.
